School Pledge

Nelson Mandela School For Social Justice Scholar Pledge

AS A NMSSJ scholar, I hereby pledge my commitment to work with and support my Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice Community. I support the NMSSJ culture for learning, NMSSJ values and mission and NMSSJ code of conduct. I pledge to help our community’s scholars achieve a true ownership over our own learning, and mastery of the content and skills we need to truly be college and career ready. I honor and support the NMSSJ expectations for all community members. In the spirit of Harambee, I honor the NMSSJ core concept of Ubuntu: “I am because you are and because you are therefore I am”. In the spirit of Harambee and Ubuntu, I promise the following:

  • I pledge Harambee to my NMSSJ Community.

  • I pledge to daily develop my mind and body to the greatest extent possible. I am an Academic Warrior!

  • I pledge to learn all that I can in order to give my best to my NMSSJ community, my neighborhood and eventually this nation in their struggle for social justice.

  • I pledge to keep myself physically fit, building a strong body free from drugs and other substances that weaken me and make me less capable of supporting and protecting myself, my family, and my NMSSJ brothers and sisters.

  • I pledge to ask for help and unselfishly share my knowledge and understanding with my NMSSJ brothers and sisters in order to bring about academic excellence, mastery and true Ubuntu.

  • I pledge to discipline myself to direct my energies thoughtfully and constructively rather than wasting them in idle hatred. I will do this every day and in every class.

  • I pledge to train myself never to hurt or allow others to harm my NMSSJ brothers and sisters for I recognize that we need every brother, every sister, every adult, and child to be physically, mentally and psychologically strong. I pledge to reject violence, and violent and disrespectful language.

  • I pledge to embrace the spirit of Restorative Practice, the Circle and Restorative Justice.

  • These principles I pledge to practice daily and to teach them to others in order to unite my community.
